Syncing Address Book with Google Contacts

Posted by ftremblay 292 days ago Mac Tips
This is actually a new feature in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, but it was so unadvertised that I just discovered it this weekend. It is pretty amazing after discovering how to sync Calenders to Google Calendars, and now with this tip to sync Address Book Contacts with Google Contacts, there is really no need for Mobile Me anymore. To set this up:

1. Open Address Book.
2. Click on "Address Book" and "Preferences".
3. Click on "Accounts".
4. Select the account "On My Mac" and check the checkbox next to "Synchronize with Google"
5. Click on "Configure...".
6. Enter your Google Account login.
7. Click "OK". That's it! The sync won't happen immediately. It synced automatically after an hour or two for me. You can force it to sync using the Mobile Me "Sync Now" menu. It forces the sync even if you don't have a Mobile Me account.

Awesome - thank you

I had looked at all the other methods out there and rather worried about wiping my contacts data when I synced - but this worked like a charm - did a proper merge.

I was very delighted when I found this as well. It gave me an excuse to use Mac's mail client, which is wonderful. The only thing I haven't been able to figure out is groups. They don't seem to transfer over.
